The Rock: Day Nine

The Rock: Day Nine

In addition to being a beautiful city, St. John’s is a wealth of fun activities and wonderful restaurants.

Given our good luck with unusually warm and sunny weather, we spent the day outside exploring the area around Signal Hill.

Cabot Tower, Signal Hill, NL

This is Cabot Tower where Marconi received the first transatlantic radio communication in 1901.

Due to its strategic placement overlooking the harbour, fortifications have been built on the hill since the mid 17th century.

This is the only way into the harbour from the Atlantic, so if you decide to sail in, you’d better be sure they’re cool with it.

Signal Hill also offers commanding views of the city…

…and the coastline.

Ah, and what’s this naval officer doing? Why, he’s firing the noonday gun of course!

With such incredible views of the ocean, we were even able to catch a glimpse of several whales chasing schools of fish.

Fletcher loved the whales. And the hiking. And everything else.

Next we headed out to scout campgrounds and explore the Avalon’s southern tip, including Pretty Harbour…

…where we got to try Newfoundland’s version of a fresh lobster roll and fish tacos!
